Measuring a garage door torsion spring correctly is very important when ordering replacement springs. Incorrect measurements can lead to balance problems and reduce spring life.
Wire diameter is usually measured using a caliper. If a caliper is not available, you can measure 10 or 20 coils and divide by the number of coils to get the wire diameter.
The inner diameter is usually marked on the spring cone, such as 1.75” or 2.0”.
Measure the length of the spring when it is relaxed and not under tension.
Springs are either left-hand wind or right-hand wind. This is very important when ordering replacement springs.
Correct measurements ensure the replacement spring will match the original spring and the door will remain balanced.
